Back-to-School Sunday: Your Window to Reach New Families

Let's be honest about summer.
Families travel. Schedules fall apart. Your regulars disappear for weeks at a time.
And your volunteer team? It thins out right along with everyone else.
I feel it too, if I'm being honest. Summer wears me out just as much as it wears out my team.
This is exactly when guest experience quietly slips
Here's the risk nobody talks about enough.
Summer isn't just a slower season. It's skeleton crew season. Fewer volunteers, less consistency, more gaps.
And that's precisely when a first-time guest is most likely to notice something's off. Not because anyone's trying less. Just because there's less capacity to catch what usually gets caught.
If you're not planning ahead, guest experience doesn't crash all at once. It slides, quietly, over three months, until you look up in September wondering what happened.
Three things worth doing before summer hits
Cross-train backup volunteers now. Don't wait until someone cancels at the last minute in July. Identify who else could step into key roles, and train them before you need them.
Build a minimum standard that holds even with a smaller team. Not your ideal, full-team version of hospitality. The version that still works when you're down to half your usual people. Decide now what absolutely cannot slip, even on a skeleton crew Sunday.
Plan a mid-summer check-in or appreciation moment. Your team is tired too. A simple thank-you, a small gesture, a moment to reconnect midway through summer keeps people encouraged instead of just enduring.
None of this requires a big lift. It just requires deciding now, while you still have the bandwidth to think clearly.
Protecting the slow season protects the busy one
Here's the mindset shift that's helped me most. The slow season isn't a break from the mission. It's the foundation for what comes next.
If your team burns out or your standards slip over summer, you're not just dealing with three rough months. You're starting the busy season already depleted.
Protect consistency now, and you walk into fall with a team that's rested and ready, not running on empty.
Rest and excellence aren't opposites
I used to think I had to choose. Either push hard all summer, or let everything slide and pick it back up later.
With the right plan, you don't have to choose. Your team can actually rest, and your guest experience can still hold steady.
That's the goal. Not exhausting yourself trying to keep everything at full intensity. Just enough planning that the slow season stays soft, not broken.
