The 48-Hour Window Most Churches Waste

Here's something most leaders get wrong.

We think guests decide to come back over time. Weeks. Maybe a month of thinking it over.

Nope.

Most guests decide within 48 hours. Sometimes less.

They walk out your doors already leaning one way or the other. Coming back. Or not.

That's the window. And it's small.

Here's why it matters so much.

Right after their visit, the experience is still fresh. They remember how it felt to walk in. Who talked to them? Whether it felt like home or felt like a stranger's living room.

But give it a few days? Life fills back in. Work. Kids. Other plans. Other churches, even.

The question "should I go back" gets buried under everything else going on in their week.

If you don't reach them while it's still on their mind, someone or something else will take that spot.

So what wastes the window?

Waiting until next Sunday to see if they show up again. That's not a follow-up. That's hoping.

Sending one generic email from a system. Guests can smell automation a mile away. It doesn't feel like anyone actually saw them.

Assuming no news is good news. Silence isn't a good sign. It's just silence.

Here's the plan. It's simple on purpose.

Within 48 hours, someone really reaches out. A text or a call. Not a system. Not a template with their name pasted in.

A person. Saying something true. "Hey, so glad you came Sunday. Would love to grab coffee if you're ever free."

That's it. That's the whole move.

If you want to go deeper on why texting specifically works so well for this, we wrote a whole post on it: Why a Simple Text Might Be the Most Powerful Follow-Up Your Church Sends.

Timing isn't everything. I know that.

God moves in His own time, not ours.

But timing isn't nothing either.

Reach out while it still matters to them. Don't let the window close because you were waiting for Sunday.
