Why Most Follow-Up Feels Like a Sales Pitch (And How to Fix That)

You visit somewhere new. A day later, you get a text.

"Thanks for visiting! Here are our service times, here's our app, here's how to get involved."

Nice enough. Also, kind of like getting a follow-up email from a car dealership.

Here's the problem, and I've done this too

Follow-up built around information reads like marketing. Even when the heart behind it is good.

Service times. Next steps. Links to click. All useful information. None of it says "I actually noticed you."

Guests can tell the difference between a message that's about them and a message that's about your church's calendar.

One feels like care. The other feels like a pitch, even if that was never the intention.

Two approaches, side by side

Message one: "Hey! So glad you visited on Sunday. Here's our service times, here's a link to get connected, hope to see you again soon!"

Message two: "Hey, it was great meeting you on Sunday. Hope your week's off to a good start."

Notice what's missing from the second one. No ask. No links. No CTA. Just a person, noticing another person.

The first message is fine. It's just not the first. It's the message you send in week three, not day one.

A simple rewrite tip

Look at your very first follow-up touch. The one that goes out within 48 hours.

Now remove anything that sounds like a call to action. Every link. Every "next step." Every invitation to do something.

What's left should just be a genuine, human "good to meet you."

Save the invitation, the service times, the next steps, for later. Let the first touch just be about the relationship, nothing else.

People can tell the difference

Being followed up with feels like a task got completed.

Being cared for feels like someone actually thought about you after you left.

Same effort. Completely different impact.
