What Your Parking Lot Says Before You Even Say Hello

Picture this.

A first-time guest pulls up to your church. No idea where to go. Circling the lot, looking for any clue.

Where do I park? Is that spot for staff? Which door is the actual entrance?

She hasn't even turned off the engine yet, and she's already a little on edge.

Confusion starts the clock before you even meet them

Here's what we forget. The guest experience doesn't start at your front door.

It starts the second they turn into your parking lot.

If they're confused for even a minute, driving in circles, unsure where to go, that anxiety doesn't just disappear once they park. It follows them inside.

By the time they walk through your doors, they're not starting fresh. They're already a little tense. A little unsure if they're in the right place, doing the right thing.

We spend so much energy on the greeting inside. We forget the guest already formed part of their opinion outside, before anyone said a word.

Three small fixes that change everything

Clear visitor parking signage. Not just "Parking" but "Visitor Parking, Right This Way." Make it impossible to miss and impossible to misread.

A friendly face outside, not just inside. Someone in the lot, not just at the door. Someone who can wave, point, smile, before the guest even reaches the building.

Someone who walks guests in, instead of just pointing. Pointing says "figure it out." Walking with them says "I've got you." That's a completely different feeling for a nervous first-timer.

None of these cost much. They just require someone actually thinking about that part of the journey.

Here's a challenge for this week

Have someone walk your parking lot like they've never been there before.

Actually, do it. Start at the entrance to the lot and walk it like a first-time guest would.

Where would you be confused? Where would you hesitate? Where would you feel unsure you're even in the right place?

Write down every moment of confusion. Then fix them, one by one.

Hospitality starts in the parking lot.

Not at the front door. Not at the greeter table. In the parking lot, the moment a guest arrives.
